In this week’s funding bonanza, a rich but low-key Chinese investor, Tencent, emerged. Its lead investor, financial transfer platform Jeeves, has worked with more than 3,000 companies in 24 countries over the past year, with an annualised gross transaction volume (GTV) of more than US$1 billion. Against this backdrop, it has raised a US$180 million Series C round of funding. This level of business growth is not particularly impressive, so what exactly does Tencent see as the highlights of its business? Let’s take a closer look at its business. Jeeves Growth makes it easier for founders of entrepreneurial companies to raise equity funding as they can do so with stronger metrics, faster growth and alternative solutions for equity investors, giving more power and agency to founders and SMEs. This is likely to provide access to destiny-changing debt capital for international and global start-ups. The capital unlocked by Jeeves Growth is a direct function of the annualised revenue the company will generate. Jeeves’ proprietary underwriting platform enables clients to access capital quickly. In simple terms, it means that when the clients of these companies pay, they then pay back the Jeeves platform, which amounts to a seamless transition.
In a nutshell, it is a financial infrastructure platform that helps startups around the world run and grows by building financial services and tools. On this foundation, start-ups can access better payments, faster credit and more flexible capital. It is the ultimate goal of the platform to become a global capital provider. In the future, Jeeves will also explore cryptocurrencies to enable cross-border payments. Wallet-to-wallet stablecoin transfers are likely to be the norm in the future.
